Mythos Export Control: The June 12, 2026 US Directive

What the directive did

On June 12, 2026, the US government issued an export-control directive that suspended all access to both Fable 5 and Mythos 5. Because these are the highest-capability Mythos-class models — and designated Covered Models with heightened safeguards — they fell within the scope of the directive. The suspension is total: it covers the safeguarded public model (Fable 5) as well as the classifier-lifted Glasswing model (Mythos 5).

Current status

The directive is currently active. This is the direct cause of the models being restricted today, distinct from any product-level decision. Where users previously had Fable 5 on subscription plans, that access is paused for the duration of the suspension.

Intended restoration

Anthropic has stated it intends to restore Fable 5 to subscription plans when capacity and clearance allow. The restoration is conditioned on the regulatory situation and operational capacity rather than tied to a fixed date. Mythos 5 is a separate matter: it remains gated to vetted organizations through Project Glasswing regardless of the directive's status.

Why an export control applies to a model

Mythos-class capability is relevant to cyberdefense and critical infrastructure — capabilities that governments treat as strategically sensitive. Export-control frameworks can therefore reach advanced AI systems, which is how a software product ends up subject to a directive of this kind.
