What is Claude Fable 5?

What is… informational Last reviewed Updated

The "safeguarded twin"

Fable 5 and Mythos 5 are the same model. The difference is that Fable 5 runs a layer of safety classifiers. When a request trips a classifier in one of the covered domains — cybersecurity, biology/chemistry, or distillation — Fable 5 reroutes that specific request to Claude Opus 4.8 instead of answering with the full Mythos-class model. Anthropic reports this affects fewer than 5% of sessions, and the user is notified when a reroute happens.

Where the name comes from

Fable traces to the Latin fabula — "that which is told" — a cousin of the Greek mythos. The naming nods at the Mythos lineage while signalling the safer, public-facing edition.

Frequently asked questions

Is Fable 5 the same as Mythos 5?

Same underlying model; different safeguards. Fable 5 adds classifiers that reroute flagged requests to Opus 4.8. Mythos 5 has those classifiers lifted and is Glasswing-only.

How often does Fable 5 reroute my request?

Anthropic reports under 5% of sessions trigger a reroute, and you are told when it happens. See classifier fallback.

What does Fable 5 cost?

$10 per million input tokens and $50 per million output tokens after the introductory window. See Fable 5 pricing.

Is Fable 5 available right now?

Access is currently suspended under a US export-control directive. Check the live status.
